Despite the financial crisis of 2008 and the ensuing global economic recession, arms producers and military services companies continued to increase arms sales in 2009.3 Specifically, the total 2009 arms sales of the SIPRI Top 100 arms-producing companies (excluding those based in China) increased by $14.8 billion to reach $401 billion. Between 2002 and 2009, the total arms sales of the Top 100 increased by a total of 58 per cent in real terms.4
