The Covid‑19 pandemic is a globally shared human experience. It has brought individuals face to face with mortality and societies face to face with their vulnerability. It has had multiple, far-reaching effects on the global economy and international politics, although many of its ramifications are yet to be determined. Unsurprisingly, it features strongly in this, the 52nd edition of the SIPRI Yearbook, since it forms an essential part of the narrative when reflecting on challenges to human security and international stability in 2020.
