AFCONE was established by the 1996 African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (Treaty of Pelindaba) to ensure compliance with the treaty and to advance the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology in Africa. Its seat is in Pretoria, South Africa.
