In January and September 2016 the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK, or North Korea) conducted its fourth and fifth nuclear test explosions, following tests conducted in February 2013, May 2009 and October 2006.1 These events brought the total number of nuclear explosions recorded since 1945 to 2057.
